Filters

I am planning on adding coloured filters to my final work as most dream-like images have colourful filters over the top as they are commonly associated with dreams due to the nostalgic feel.

I found this series of images by Susanne Stemmer that incorporate the coloured filters that are often entwined with dream-like artwork:

The colours I see are reds, greens and blues. These are all vibrant colours and I think the blues and greens are to go with the underwater theme but the highlights, lowlights and slight blur help it to become not just a connotation but to make it fit the dream theme.

I also viewed the work of Takeshi Suga:

As well as having different bright colours incorporated, the artist has also use bokeh and light streaks. This has inspired me to want to create some light streaks or patterns of colours in the filters that I create to add to my final multiple exposures.

I also looked the some work by Anthony Samaniego:

From looking at his work I can see that he has also used some bokeh and light streets as well as vivid colours as a filter which is what makes me think they have a dream-like, nostalgic feel.

I'm not too keen on bokeh but I would like to try and add some light streaks perhaps to my final multiple exposures as well as vivid colours over the top.

Viviana Levrino

https://www.behance.net/gallery/13754557/-lucid-dreams-

The work of Viviana Levrino is the closest thing I have seen that looks like the idea of my final pieces in my head as she has the exposure of a scene with a second exposure with a low opacity. This is in all of the images, a layer with a lowered opacity, something you can always see, this is like when I lucid dream, I can always see the shape of my bedroom but like it is at a lower opacity that the scene I am viewing in my dream.

I really love these images as they are so soft and simple. The colours are pastel or grey which are very dream-like and fit with the theme I am looking at. I will think about adding layers of colour or some kind of filters to my images as I feel it will help them to look more dream-like much like these images.

Erik Johansson

http://www.erikjohanssonphoto.com/

These images by Erik Johansson are very dream-like using illusions and surreal scenes to create the dreamscapes. Usually, all dreams are quite surreal compared to reality so you can tell that you are dreaming but sometimes they are very realistic and you are not aware that you are dreaming, just like how these images question the difference between real and surreal.

I really like the illusions given in some of these images. Especially the glass that makes the water look like it has shattered as we know water is a liquid and doesn't shatter but the image is so seam-free that it looks real which shows surrealism at it's finest and is intriguing to look at, like the 2nd last image with the sheep, this is an outside scene but the prop placement and seam-free additions of a ceiling and walls, it gives the impression it is the wall decoration even though we know that no one is skilled enough to decorate in such a way we still see a 'real' scene and therefore question it as to whether it is real much like when dreaming.

Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming is when one is aware that they are dreaming. It is like your consciousness is leaking through your subconscious.

From personal experience, whilst I am asleep with my eyes closed, I feel like they are open and I can vaguely see the shape of my surrounds through my dream, it is like my dream is being projected in to my bedroom like a film and I am watching it. Due to feeling like my eyes are open watching a film of my dream I often feel as though I have not been asleep. I sometimes feel as though the energy I use in my dream e.g. Running around uses up my energy in real life, it is an odd feeling when I wake up.

Many people often talk of controlling their dreams like being able to fly around, taste meals and so on but I have never been able to control what was happening/ feel what was happening in such a way. I just had the ability to control the narrative a little more and feel like I was actually using the energy of the actions in my dream like in this one dream I had, I was using up all my energy in a fight and when I awoke I felt very tired and lacked energy despite having had a lot of hours of sleep.

Nan Goldin

I like Nan Goldins work as the majority is a personal documentation of peoples lives using film/disposable cameras. I love the nostalgia feel as well as learning about the personal life of the perople within the images as you get a sense of their personality and day to day lives and I find it interesting to view. She is also well known for her LGBT work as she also documents the LGBT community. She gets up really close and personal photographing in peoples homes where they are most comfortable.

I get a sense that Nan Goldin herself has a nice, welcoming personality from looking at the images as some of them are so intimate, the people being photographed must feel extremely comfortable around her  and this I feel has made her images as good as they are because if the people in the images didn't feel as comfortable then they wouldn't be as candid and it's the candid shots that really document peoples situations.
